Dutch Design Week 2025 Visual Installation Project

BACKGROUND:

Being originally from the Netherlands, I am deeply interested in working this European country at some point of my new career in multimedia and graphic design. When researching educational opportunities in the Netherlands that aligned with my postsecondary education in Multimedia Design, I discovered a faculty-led exchange program with Humber Polytechnic and Fonty’s University. This was to occur as part of Dutch Design Week 2025 happening in the bustling city of Eindhoven, Netherlands (https://mediaarts.humber.ca/current-students/global-opportunities/faculty-led-study-tours.html

PROJECT OVERVIEW & GOALS:

With this collaborative group project composed of professors and students, we were assigned to address and display the concept of ‘Friction’ + ‘Connection’ = ‘X’. The main goal of this project was to utilize each group members skill sets in a cooperative collaborative manner. The overall end goal was to visually display our answer for ‘X’, through the creation of a multimedia art installation being showcased within Fonty’s University.

TECHNOLOGY USED:

Software:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro

AI Tools:

  • Adobe Firefly

  • Nano Banana

RESEARCH & INSIGHTS:

During the actual Dutch Design week, we explored various concepts and projects that were participating in the show to gain unique ideas and perspectives on how we could display our visual concept. We travelled throughout the city of Eindhoven to discover and research as many art and design installations possible, while enjoying the immersive experience of each.

OVERALL CREATIVE PROCESS:

To begin the process of this cooperative creative project, we were formed into groups of 6 (consisting of Humber Polytechnic and Fonty’s University students) with the collaboration beginning online. We had various workshops before the actual Dutch Design Week to help build our groups ability to work together, while simultaneously developing our overall group projects. This included a visual identity assignment where each group established a group logo and description helping identify ourselves as a unique group recognizing our various strengths and weaknesses. We also brainstormed various ideas and approaches to the concept F+C=X including creating an idea board containing various concepts and ideas. Each group had access to specific limited materials including wood, paper, fabric material, screws and mirrors. At the same time, we were allowed to use our laptops for any digital creative assets needed to achieve our vision. Within several days of cooperative construction, we had achieved our immersive creative space.

FINAL SOLUTION:

Our final concept addressed the past, present and future of class photography. It was a 3-D physical multimedia art installation that allowed the public audience to physically experience each of the 3 sections as well as projected montage video displayed on a separate adjacent wall. The booth area that represented the ‘past’ consisted of a box containing an intense collage of old black and white photography along with the inclusion of a modern digital flash that the public audience could press and interact with. The second booth represented the ‘present’ times of class photography by us installing a selfie photo booth that included selfie photo props for users to be able to personalize their photo experience. The last constructed booth consisted of an Artificial Intelligence Photo App mock-up which was displayed on a laptop. It created an animated style avatar portrait of the user by them interacting with the various prompts on the laptop display. The montage video being projected on the adjacent wall showcased and challenged the idea of class photography when it came to the past, present and future situation of this familiar process in one’s life.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:

After experiencing this once in a lifetime opportunity when it comes to postsecondary education, I was able to really look back and reappreciate all the unique experiences that unfolded and presented themselves during the 2025 Dutch Design Week. It was fascinating and personal to work with other Dutch people on a creative vision, while at the same time bringing my talents and skills in design and construction to the table. I was fortunate to have worked with such a proactive, passionate and strong team. It was very constructive and beneficial to analyze our groups approach to the project in relation to how the other groups worked to achieve their creative vision. In addition, having gotten to experience the majority of the Dutch Design Week exhibitions, a resurgence of hope and inspiration in being professionally creative embedded my consciousness. I saw the possibility of me contributing to the Design world in the near and distant future.
